The number of corrupt law enforcement pieces that I’ve been getting recently has been a bit troubling. Though of course I’m more than grateful for any heavier topic that gets lobbed in my general direction. This piece for the Texas Observer was published yesterday. You can see the image in part online, and in its complete form in print (in Texas). This one’s a family story, about the nastier side of nepotism on the border. You can read Melissa del Bosque’s story The Shadow of the Son (clever title, right?) in its entirety here. Thanks very much, AD Kate!

Finally we’re all clear to blog about our Sundance Film Festival Alphabet Book images. Not speaking as the royal “We” here—Todd Oldham Studio and Sundance commissioned a different illustrator for each letter. I did the letter Y, which represents both Y Tu Mama Tambien and You Can Count On Me. Both of these films featured female protagonists straddling the madonna/whore line, and red station wagons. It’s not so bad, for a conceptual mashup. There’s water, and madonna of Guadeloupe halos, so I’m pleased. Some illustrators in this book had 4 films to siphon into one image. Quite a challenge. Pesky things. My thanks to my AD, Jamie!

As some friends will recall, earlier this month I spent some...

As some friends will recall, earlier this month I spent some time jabbering about my proof copy of McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern No. 42. Now that you can buy it, I can talk some more. This issue tackles the theme of literary translation by way of a game of telephone. There are a few things lost and found between Japanese and Urdu… It contains work from some of my favorite fiction authors (I love ‘em all, but if I must choose personal-most-favorites: Byatt, Coetzee, Lydia Davis, David Mitchell, Zadie Smith), and some much-admired co-contributors (Erin Althea, Mike Bertino, Kelsey Dake, Tim Lahan, Brianna Harden, Ian Huebert). This job was particularly pleasant because it gave me a way of reacting to narrative quickly and naturally, creating drawings that resemble some of the Extra Bitches work. Each of these images and more appear at the beginning of one of the translations of each story. Thank you so much, Brian! And best wishes for the New Year to Everyone!

Did these for the Telegraph UK this November for a piece about...

Did these for the Telegraph UK this November for a piece about body dysmorphic disorder. With a topic like this, the literal approach is wrong. I know what I look like when I visualize my ideal self, and the “space” between that and what I see in the mirror. For anyone else, I couldn’t imagine. So the thing to draw wasn’t a thin girl seeing a fat girl (it was a girl in this story, but yes I know body dysmorphia effects both men and women), but a girl not-seeing herself at all. Or, what that distance between self and truth might look like. I always enjoy illustrating from the DSM. Anyone want to send me more mindphantoms for Christmas? Thank you Danielle!

PLANSPONSOR December is out, kids. This is my alternative to to...

PLANSPONSOR December is out, kids. This is my alternative to to the “octopus concept”—one thing that does and is many things. I had to remove a butt cheek, but otherwise this one sailed through the process unscathed. Nice to get paid for Extra Bitches content. See also my friend Victo Ngai ‘s transcendant cover (how does she know what 30% of my anxiety dreams are about)!
